    Report from Serbia

World Blood Donor Day 2010 was celebrated all over Serbia. Central manifestation took place in the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, on the Republic Square, in the presence of the government representatives, Dr Nevena Karanovic, state secretary of the Ministry of Health, transfusion medicine professionals and president of the Red Cross of Serbia, Prof. dr Dragan Radovanovic,  Red Cross representatives and volunteers. Citizens and passers by donated blood in the blood mobile and enjoyed the performance of the Zozo theatre actors, Fly group dancers and DJ from the Serbian DJ Association. Similar manifestations took place in almost 200 places all over Serbia. The message New Blood for the World was modified, translated and distributed throughout the country: one hundred thousand fliers and thank you adertisments for all blood donors in two leading daily papers.

Since dedicated to the young population, another major manifestation took place in the Students Town, the largest Campus of the Belgrade University, where almost a hundred students donated blood in the new transfusiomobile.

The most humane environment awards of the Red Cross of Serbia were awarded to the local Red Cross of Serbia organizations with over 5% blood donations. On that occasion, Red Cross of Serbia promoted the Club 25 which gathers together young people dedicated to the same goal – promotion of voluntary blood donation and motivation of as many young people to become blood donors as possible.

The events were covered by national, regional and local TV, radio and printed media.

Report prepared and submitted by Gordana Antuljeskov,
